Fractal tutorial doesn't render well in Konqueror.
The code portions of the Fractal tutorial (Comanche) at http://fractal.objectweb.org/tutorial/index.html and its printable form http://fractal.objectweb.org/tutorial/index_print.html appear centered in Konqueror 3.5.7 under SimplyMEPIS (GNU/)Linux 7.0 Beta 5. In other words, the code is unreadable. I've attached a screenshot.
I've tried to reproduce the problem locally:
- at the root of a local checkout of the whole Fractal repository, konqueror web/html/tutorial/fractal-programming.html renders the page as originally intended.
- likewise if adding the old doctype line <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN"> to that file.
- however, if one adds the same doctype line as on the Fractal web site: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> the code portions become centered.
- when doctype 4.01 is declared, removing the <center> </center> pair around the code portions solves the problem.
Firefox 2.0.0.x always renders the page as originally intended, regardless of the doctype (none, 3.2, 4.01). Are there any other browsers that exhibit the same behaviour as Konqueror ? Maybe Safari, whose Webkit engine is (still) an improved fork of the Konqueror code base.
The HTML code of these pages, generated from LaTeX by tth and pre+post-processed by sed, is old-fashioned: tables for layout, deprecated HTML elements like <center>, redundant <div class="p">. It should work much better in older standards-incompliant browsers, though.
